1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded

  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire. This is one of the most important rules to live by.
  • Keep the muzzle (the "business end") pointed in a safe direction. A safe direction is away from all parts of your body and other living things, including animals.
  • Do not assume or take anyone's word that a firearm is not loaded. Make a habit of checking every firearm you handle yourself, even if you just saw someone else check it.
  • Do not hand another person a loaded firearm or accept a firearm from another person. Unload it by removing all ammunition from the firearm (tube, cylinder, magazine, chamber, etc) and locking the action open or flagging the chamber. Place the firearm on a flat, sturdy surface or a firearm rest so the receiving party can safely pick it up and have full control the firearm.
  • Good firearm etiquette includes not handling firearms owned by someone else without permission and communicating that you are handling their firearm, following all safety principles.

2. Keep all firearms pointed in a safe direction

  • Loaded or unloaded, keep all firearms pointed in a safe direction.
  • "Safe direction" changes as situations change, for example, doorways.
  • Remember, bullets can travel through structures, walls and doors.
